It's the home stretch! And a whole new chapter in the world of pregnancy. A lot of new discomforts can come up during this trimester, but I think the most important thing to focus on is your mental and emotional health!
I want to start by saying that every woman is going to experience each phase of pregnancy in their own unique way. The tips and issues I address are the generalities we go by, but they are not the rule. It is so easy to think something is wrong with me if I'm not experiencing things the same way as everyone else...but let me tell you, this is an incredibly unique and individualized process. And that should be celebrated!
Essential oils are a great way to support your body as it goes through the many changes during pregnancy! Many over the counter meds are either unsafe for pregnancy, or definitely questionable as to what their side effects are. The beauty of essential oils is that they are safe, natural and effective. Not all essential oils are created equal, far from it, so you want to make sure that the oils you are choosing are the highest quality for safety and effectiveness.
Before we start I want to note that the most important place to begin when addressing pregnancy and health is with your nutrition! What you put into your body during this time is going to have the biggest impact on you and your baby. Check out this blog to learn how to support your body with nutrition.
I've found that each stage of pregnancy brings completely different changes so I'm breaking them down with each trimester.
Energy: First of all, give yourself a break and rest! I felt really guilty at the beginning by how tired I was. But your body is going through some major changes, and well, it's creating life!! No big deal, right. Of course, we still have life to live and daily tasks to get done, Wild Orange is a great energy booster, and the smell is quite nice. Combine Wild Orange with Peppermint in your palms, rub together and inhale for an instant refresher and energizer.
Mood: Your hormones are going to play some nasty tricks on you throughout this time! Be patient with yourself. Wild Orange, and any of the citrus oils, is great for lifting the spirits. This can be a trying time, I know it was for me. Combining Wild Orange with the Joyful Blend, Invigorating Blend, Ylang Ylang, or Frankincense are excellent ways to help keep your spirits lifted.
Digestive Support: Hormones again! The changes in your hormones slows the digestive system way down, and you'll feel it! Digestive Blend, Fennel and Peppermint are excellent for supporting the discomfort that results. Rubbing a drop or 2 of any of these oils around my belly button really helped ease the burden.
Nausea: Ah, yes! The standard sign of pregnancy. If you haven't dealt with nausea then thank the pregnancy gods because you are lucky! This was the hardest part for me, by far. Peppermint, Lavender, Caramom and Ginger are safe and gentle ways to ease some of this discomfort. You can use these together in a blend or separate. I found the scent of ginger to be a bit bothersome (most scents at this stage were a bit bothersome for me though!) so I always used it on the bottoms of my feet. Adding peppermint to make a blend helps make the scent more bearable as well. It's the little tricks that make a big difference!
Heart burn: This can feel different for each person, sometimes its that lovely feeling of fire burning in your chest, for me it felt like something was constantly coming up, either way, its not fun! Digestive blend incredibly beneficial, you can rub it on your stomach or chest in a circular motion when the discomfort arises.
Breast Tenderness: This is another common tell tale sign that you're pregnant, and one my husband wasn't particularly fond of, if you know what I mean! Grapefruit, Lavender, and Ylang Ylang can be used individually or as a blend to help bring relief. Apply these oils topically to the breast area and massage in to help with tenderness relief. These are all gentle oils, but diluting them with a carrier oil will help with any sensitivities.
Stretch Marks: Most likely you're not going to start seeing stretch marks in the first trimester, but starting a practice to support your skin health now will be excellent as a preventative measure. Invigorating Blend, Lavender, Wild Orange, Cypress, Geranium is a great blend you can make with fractionated coconut oil to use topically to help keep your skin healthy and ready to adjust with the changes that will come. Frankincense and the Anti-Aging Blend are also excellent for skin health.
If you want know the only essential oil brand I'll use, especially during pregnancy, contact me and I'd be happy to share! P.s...congrats on the pregnancy! *These recommendations are only for high quality EO. I always urge the 'less is more' theory when it comes to essential oil use, but even more with pregnancy. 1 drop goes a long ways! And diluting with a carrier oil is a major plus.
