MAYBE YOU'RE NOT THE ONE CRAVING SUGAR

One of my favorite things growing up was baking with my grandma. She was queen of baking. Caramel rolls, coffee cake, dinner rolls, swedish crinkle, ginger snaps...and I wonder why I have such a sweet tooth!

I remember as a kid helping her measure out the ingredients, dumping them in, never wanting to follow the order of directions. I didn't get why it mattered to follow the steps. Throw it all in and mix was my philosophy...ok it still is.

One of my favorite parts was seeing the dough rise. It was like magic. 

Water, sugar, yeast and flower. Let it sit for awhile. When you come back it's tripled in size. Like I said, magic.

We all know the key to that dough rising is yeast. And we all know the key to getting the dough to rise is the sugar that feeds it.

But did you know that yeast is an essential component in your gut? 

Yeast and bacteria live in a beautifully balanced relationship with each other.

It's like a teeter-totter. When one goes down the other goes up. For your gut to work properly they need to be kept in balance. 

When you throw off that balance the yeast can/and will thrive and overtake power (Cersei Lanister, anyone?).

The unfortunate thing is, there are a lot of things that cause the bacteria to decrease, and a lot of things that help the yeast increase.

Antibiotics are a huge cause for the imbalance.

Our sources of antibiotics: medication antibiotics, antibiotic sanitizers and cleaners, through livestock, even produce when using manure from livestock that were given antibiotics, and through our water sources.

It's easy to say that we consume a lot of them. 

Don't get me wrong, antibiotics have had phenomenal effects on public health. But our culture is known to act like a pendulum, find something good and we over-do it.

And boy have we overdone this one. I'm not even addressing the 'super-bug' scare either.

We're wiping out our good bacteria, so the yeast can flourish. 

On the flip side, sugar allows the yeast to thrive and grow. Yeast feeds off of sugar and in turn makes you crave it more. There's a catch-22 here: the more you eat, the more it thrives, the more you crave.

Candida is a type of yeast, and when there is an overgrowth of it in your intestines you will feel fatigued and irritable, you might have foggy brain and struggle to stay focused.

And mostly, you'll have intense cravings for sugar.

Overcoming those sweet cravings isn't about will power or being strong enough. There's a good chance you need to address an underlining issue.

The next step is to address it with your diet. Take out the things that feed the yeast (sugars), and add in foods that will increase and feed the beneficial bacteria.

Fermented foods are excellent for this: sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir are a few of the best sources.

Try opting for berries to satisfy the sweet craving. They are lower in sugar as fruits go and have loads of health benefits. And they're delicious!
