So you're trying to cut back on sugar, and you're realizing you might need a little assistance when those dang cravings hit. Don't worry, you're not alone!
Sugar can be pretty dang powerful.
But I've got confidence in you, and I want to support you as much as I can. So I've come up with a few of my favorite tips for cutting out sugar. Try some out and let me know what you think!
This delicious spice can help with those sugar cravings on a couple different levels. First, it's a great way to add flavor to an otherwise bland tasting food. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal or adding some to your morning coffee or tea can add flavor without the need for overdoing the sweet stuff.
Cinnamon is also known to help balance blood sugar levels. Sugar cravings are often a result of the roller coaster ride that our blood sugar goes on when we consume sugar in excess. Adding some cinnamon can help bring a little balance and mellow out those cravings.
One of my favorites when I'm craving a sweet treat is a drop of cinnamon essential oil on the tongue. Hits the sweet spot and adds some balance. Or try this delicious Cinnamon Coconut Cream dessert.
2. Take a pic
Food journals are often recommended when you're looking to change your diet and lose weight. It brings awareness to how much we're really eating in a day, which is much needed for weight loss efforts since most people underestimate what and how much they're actually eating.
The thing is food journals are not convenient. You always have to keep the journal on hand, and it takes precious time to write it all down. Instead, keep a photo journal. Take a pic of everything you eat and drink throughout the day. It's much easier to track and be able to reflect back on. Plus, it's completely normal nowadays to be taking pics of your food, so you'll fit right in. And if you're a visual person like me, it will have a much bigger impact on your awareness.
3. Herbal tea
When you first cut back on sugar, herbal teas might not taste like much. But your taste buds will adjust and soon they'll be a perfect treat for satisfying that sweet craving. They're a great replacement for all those sugar laden sodas and coffee drinks. Try Hibiscus or raspberry leaf.
4. Avoid the super salty
Our bodies desire balance. Loading up on the super salty flavors will cause you to crave something sweet to bring it back into balance. But the more extreme the flavors are the more extreme the balancing flavors need to be. So a nice piece of fruit isn't gonna cut it, creating a pendulum-like effect. Toss the potato chips and instead opt for some carrots and hummus and you'll notice the cravings lessen.
As you can see, it's a simple list. Nothing too crazy. You'll learn that it's the simple changes made time and time again that make the greatest difference.
